House of Arches

Bengaluru

Residential

A house designed to suit the needs of a young working couple. With a limitation of 900 sq.ft. of space, we had to work to maximize the functionality of the space, which is why we chose to introduce all the space saving features within the furniture. Taking into account that the couple works from home, the space also had to seamlessly transition from a work environment to a space where the couple could host gatherings. The brief required a design that was earthy, fluid, and natural – a seamless flow of design.

This brief led us to using arches as a unifying, fluid design element that connected all the spaces.

Balcony

The balcony was one space the clients use a lot, it was quite special to them. The balcony offered a view of the sky, with gorgeous sunsets – and this was something we didn’t want them to miss out on. We wanted to create a multifunctional space that they could maximize. This was a space that could be used to grab a coffee, have a meal, work, or even be used as a bar. The table folds upwards for when one would want to use the entire balcony and opens up when one would need the table/bar. The rafters on the ceiling hold the wiring for the lights above.

Living Area

It was important for us to connect the common areas, especially the foyer, living and dining, since one of the core concepts was to create a fluid, seamless space. We used a naturally polished wooden cornice on the long wall. Our aim for this was not merely decorative, instead to used it to create the semblance of a grid. One part of this grid was used for the shoe unit, and another was for the foyer mirror.

Study

This was originally a laundry room which we converted into a study. We broke the wall and added in an arched sliding door. This gave the space some privacy while the fluted glass still allowed light in. We wanted to brighten up the space as there wasn’t much of an inlet for natural light. To do that, we brightened up the floor with a printed till and continued the shade of blue onto the wall. The natural wood finish continues onto the furniture as it is on the door as well.
